ADULT ROWING

Masters rowing programs for learning, rowing recreationally, and competing

EBRC's incredibly popular Learn To Row sessions introduce adults to rowing in a fun, on-the-water environment. Our coaches teach rowers technique, how boats work, what coxswains do, and the often hard-to-decipher language of our sport. Rowers start in our stable barge, then will move to real, race-ready 8+ person boats toward the end of the session. Some rowers may even spend time in a single. Most of EBRC's adult rowers started in a Learn To Row, and this is the best way to learn what it's all about. At the end of the session, rowers will have the opportunity to join the Masters Novice Program. No additional previous experience needed. As with all EBRC programs, the Learn to Row Program is open to all gender identities

Community Learn to Row

Are you interested in learning more about rowing, but are not sure you want to commit to a full learn to row program? Our Community Introduction to Rowing class is a great place to start. It’s a two hour class that will introduce you to boat handling skills, the proper way to row on an erg and will end on the water in the barge with an oar in your hands. If you’re over 18 and interested in registering for the program, please add your name and contact info to our waitlist, and we'll let you know when our next session is scheduled.

EBRC Fee-Based Learn-to-Row Sessions

Are you interested in joining the Novice team, but have no experience (or recent experience) rowing on the water?  You will learn basic rowing skills to prepare you to join EBRC’s novice team at the end of the session. Our Flexible Fee Program for reduced dues is available during registration. If you would like to be notified when we have a date for the next session, please add your name and contact information to our waitlist

COXLAND

EBRC is a home for coxswains in the Bay Area to train and compete at all levels, on the water, year-round.

Whether you are a former cox interested in joining our Masters Programs, a current cox seeking opportunities to improve your skills, or a novice intrigued by this unique and awesome role, we welcome you to EBRC “Coxland!”

Our Coxland Program strives to create an ideal environment where coxes will be:

  • Trained, skilled, and confident in safely navigating the Oakland Estuary;
  • Treated as athletes and teammates whose job is to make boats fast; and
  • Prepared for every practice and ready to race at all levels of our sport.

Our coxes are an integral part of our Masters teams, and we rely on them to promote the safety of our rowers; improve the quality of practice and race experiences for all athletes; and enhance the cohesion, professionalism, and performance of EBRC.

We welcome coxes with experience (no matter how long it’s been!); high school and collegiate coxes looking for extra training and water time over the summer; and rowers who would like to gain more skills in “the 9th seat.” We strive to offer training, support, and a well-coordinated team culture for our growing group of coxswains.

We’d love to have you join us! Our coxes do not pay club dues, and we will introduce you to EBRC through a series of initial practices so that you can learn more about us. Please submit
this form if you are interested in hearing more.  As with all EBRC programs, the Coxland is open to all gender identities.

Collegiate rowers

Are you home for the summer? Taking a gap year from college, or an extended break and still want to row or cox?

Join us!

During breaks and summers we have many collegiate rowers and coxswains join our Women's and Men's Competition Programs for practices, and sometimes for regattas. The same goes for land practices on ergs. There's no charge if it's for one week. For two or more weeks, standard dues apply. In the past, we've had rowers from Cal, Stanford, UCSB, Princeton, University of Washington, MIT, Georgetown and others. Training and racing is done in singles, pairs, doubles, quads, 4+ and 8+. Our Flexible Fee Program for reduced dues is available during registration.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I get all the details on Masters programs?

Virtually every aspect of being an EBRC Masters rower is captured in the EBRC Blue Book . This online document has complete information on practices, regattas, volunteering, expenses, coaches and equipment. If you want to learn all about EBRC Masters rowing, this is the resource. In addition, our coaches are SafeSport trained and you can find our SafeSport Handbook here.

What about coxswains?

EBRC's Masters programs are a home for many coxswains in the Bay Area. We've had a wide range of coxswains over the years, coming to us from US National teams and local high schools. We are known as a rowing club that provides the perfect environment for coxswains to train and get practice and race experience. Coxswains are not charged dues. For more information, please submit the form below. (What's a coxswain? It's the person responsible for steering the boat and coordinating the power and rhythm of the rowers.)

I'm in the East Bay for several days visiting or working. Can I row as a guest?

Yes. We welcome experienced Masters rowers to join us while in town. Visitors can row for up to one week, free of charge. For details and scheduling, please submit the form below.

I'm a college or university rower on break. Can I row?

Absolutely. During breaks and summers we have many rowers join our Women's or Men's competition programs for practices, and sometimes for regattas. The same goes for land practices on ergs. There's no charge if it's for one week. For two or more weeks, standard dues apply. In the past, we've had rowers from Cal, Stanford, UCSB, Princeton, University of Washington, Georgetown and others. For details and scheduling, please submit the form below.

What is the Flexible Fee program?

EBRC's Flexible Fee Program for Masters rowers provides a reduced monthly dues payment for those who need financial assistance. One of EBRC's goals is to make rowing accessible and the Club is committed to doing so within the limits of its annual budget. New rowers apply for Flexible Fee during the online registration process.

What kind of equipment do you have?

During the last couple of years we have been acquiring new and nearly new racing shells and oars. We continue to standardize our inventory on Vespoli. We have also Filippi, Resolute, Pocock and Sykes shells. For sculling, we have singles, doubles and quads. For sweep, we have pairs, 4+s and 8+s.

Do you have a COVID Policy?

All training sessions are outdoors, with no masks required for fully vaccinated rowers. All new members must be fully vaccinated. All rowers are required to sign a waiver during the registration process and agree to comply with EBRC's safety protocol, which is modified periodically to comply with State and Alameda County guidelines.
